IT 117: Security (+)

Overview: This class covers the basics of computer security. Students learn about virus protection, installing security patches, using firewalls to protect networks, cryptography and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and legal issues.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students shall be able to:

• Define and describe the elements of network security.
• Identify system threats and risks.
• Configure security features for critical network infrastructure protocols and devices.
• Describe system vulnerabilities and types of attacks.
• Implement and configure network defenses.
• Configure and describe network security.
• Configure network access controls.
• Describe system authentication methods.
• Assess system vulnerability.
• Audit network and system security configurations.
• Define the elements of cryptography.
• Configure cryptography protocols and describe a public key infrastructure.
• Devise procedures for business continuity.
• Develop network security policies.
• Research and report best practices for identifying.
• Quantifying, and planning for security risks.
• Implement best practices for securing, monitoring, and managing a network.
• Design a fault tolerant system and draft a disaster plan.
• Perform system backups and use them to recover from simulated disasters.
